PALEO TO RELEASE DVD, LYRIC BOOK OF "THE SONG DIARY"
DOCUMENTING YEAR-LONG PROJECT
FALL TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED
In April of 2006, musical artist Paleo set off on a daunting challenge: to travel around the country for one year, write one song every day, perform a show in nearly every city he stopped in, and record his progress on his website. Each day, the unsigned artist (who lived out of his van for the year) posted a song (generally recorded in its simplest state) on his website, along with the date, the city, miles traveled, cities visited and days since beginning his journey. After "The Song Diary", wrapped in New York this past April, Paleo (also known as David Strackany) went to work to put together documentation of his massive undertaking. The end result, due to the sheer amount of material, is a self-released DVD, which has all 365 songs on it (each track is organized by date, and includes the city in which it was recorded), as well as a self-published, limited edition (365 copies, numbered by hand) 470-page book of lyrics for each song. Both will be available to the public on January 15, 2008.
In addition to his releases, Paleo will also hit the road once again - not quite for a year this time around - but will be making stops nationally, with a 60 plus-date tour this Fall.
Not only did Paleo complete his goal for "The Song Diary", playing a total of 215 shows across 152 cities, 45 states, and 54,000 miles, but he also gained the respect of esteemed journalists across the country. Paleo and "The Song Diary" were covered by both national and local publications, including The Washington Post, Magnet, The Chicago Sun-Times, Performing Songwriter, The New York Post and NPR's Morning Edition. Paste called the "Song Diary" "a streetfight of freakish prolificacy." The Boston Globe remarked "in an age where being prolific
is the new black, Paleo is the most stylish of musicians."
USA Today's Pop Candy blog agreed, "if you thought Ryan Adams cranked out tunes like a machine, wait until you meet Paleo."
But some people were seeing more in the Song Diary than a simple feat of endurance. "A man this enlightened might glow in the dark," early supporter Daytrotter.com said. "It's all chaos and intrigue... and gorgeous poetry," proclaimed Bruce Warren of WXPN. "A modern day Jack Kerouac," suggested the Dayton Journal News. And Columbus Alive called it "one of the great pilgrimages of our time."
