Lucero set out on the last trek of their current tour this week before taking the rest of the summer off in anticipation of their new album, Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers.

The group recently finished recording at Sound of Music Recording Studios in Richmond, Va., the studio owned by Cracker frontman David Lowery, who also served as producer for the aptly named album.

"The name of the record comes from us finally being all together after seven years, and that sticks to tape," says bassist John C. Stubblefield.

A notable addition on the new album is keyboard player Rick Steff, who made a guest appearance with Lucero at Young Avenue Deli in April, and also is part of The Memphis Rhythm Band, currently backing Cat Power on tour.

"With Nobody's Darlings, we stripped it all down to the bare essentials and that had a really good energy to it, and the new record has the same feel except we added Rick, and that stepped it up a notch," says frontman Ben Nichols. "I'm the most self-deprecating person you'll ever meet, and if it was just OK, I'd say that, but it's actually really good."

Before the record's Sept. 26 release, the band will play a couple of shows in August. On Aug. 5 they'll play their own cruise around the island of Manhattan in New York, and on Aug. 19 they'll join Steve Earle, Cory Branan, Glossary and a slew of other bands at the Mucklewain Festival in Harriman, Tenn.
