What Really Happened - The Coach and Four
Before I moved back to Memphis there was an indie rock band called The Coach and Four that played around town and I guess they were fairly popular. They made a record and played shows and did what most bands do. But then they kind of hit a wall and were put on the backburner while a couple members began a new project called The Color Cast. I was mainly familiar with the members of both bands through Brad Stanfill who was friends with my brother in high school. In the downtime between the two projects I went to a lot of parties at Brad and his wife Amanda's house.
Last year I started to hear through the grapevine that The Coach and Four's first album, Unlimited Symmetry, went into rotation on XM radio's XMU station and out of nowhere started selling enviable quantities on The Makeshift Music website. This prompted the band to start working on new material and to reunite to open for Lucero at The Complex last Thanksgiving weekend. It seemed like things were taking off again.
Then, out of nowhere, at a birthday party, Brad tells me The Color Cast has broken up and he's moving to Hawaii. Without going into the personal details of his life, let's just say he really needed to get out of Memphis. And so, the future of the Coach and Four was once again put on hold. The band played a show with Arma Secreta at The Vault on March 10th, and it was billed as possibly their last show - EVER.
Last weekend I spoke on a panel at the Grammy's Indie Impact Memphis Conference with Tobi from XMU - who just happen to be the person who put the The Coach and Four's record into rotation and helped them get a whole slew of new fans. After the conference we attended a showcase and she got to meet Luke White and Daniel Farriss from TCAF and Brad Postlethwaite from Makeshift and they got to say thanks. It was a cool moment.

The previous night at The Glass show by coincidence I was chatting with Tony Dixon, bass player for TCAF, and he mentioned that a label had recently approached them about putting out a new record snd sending them on tour. But he was kind of wasted, so I emailed Brad to see what the real deal was:
heyepps. its all true. hawaii is incredible and the coach and four are planning a 2 month outing in september, new ep coming out, radio promotion, press, all the fixins. i'm also working on a long distance collaboration with my friend aaron rude from the color cast. sorta minimal electronic stuff. good to hear from ya. and thanks for all your help spreading the word. word.
