White Rose Movement - Girls In The Back
The pain just keeps coming this week as I take a moment to salute Andy Macdonald, head honcho of Independiente Records, for releasing Kick, the new album from White Rose Movement. The 5-piece band, not unlike obvious influences Joy Division, took a name of historical significance from the Nazi era. White Rose was the name of a movement that stemmed from a group of students who actively resisted Hitler during Nazi-era Germany, cranking out and distributing thousands of pamphlets a day. The band, however, does not appear to have any directly political machinations. The band White Rose Movement unearths its synth-rock-disco soundscape in raw, lazer-precise chunks emerging like a glowing time capsule from 1985 that fell off the back of a Delorean. Their music is catchy, memorable, danceable, and immediately gratifying. Like The Cure on speed, the songs showcase gloriously dark pop, sonic dissonance and disconnected phrasings. What you get on the other side is heavy synthesizers, lots of vocal processing and modular keyboard arrangements. For fans of serious New Wave and post-punk, Kick is listenable all the way through. I am left wanting more, and that's probably the best feeling I can have after hearing a record.
