AIDS Wolf - Thrown Away

So... AIDS Wolf. I was about to say, "I told you so." but I looked at the topic lists and realized I never posted "Panty Mind (Extended)." But you can go ahead and up my cred anyways. Moving on. While the rest of the blogosphere is extolling the virtues of The Lovvers LP, let's talk about this LIVE DETH mini CDR: six tracks, sixteen minutes, screen-printed cover.

If you're really into noise this is a collector's item. I was really into noise. I have albums from Black Dice, Hair Police, Wolf Eyes, etc. I'm familiar with poor recordings, colored vinyl, vocals that sound like they were sung through headphones, indiscernible "lyrics", and purchasing albums for "the packaging". That's probably why I waited so long for this CDR; I pre-ordered it from Kitty Play Records at the beginning of last year based solely on the Panty Mind track that was available on AIDS Wolf's Myspace. Over the course of time that it took for the CDR to arrive (which was roughly 10 months) my taste in music changed. I'm not so much into noise now. That's not to say that AIDS Wolf doesn't live up to expectations. Arlen Thompson of Wolf Parade recorded LIVE DETH but with poorer equipment than The Lovvers LP it seems. The DIY aesthetic is overly present on this CDR and it was probably released to placate the masses of fans that were eager for more AIDS Wolf material. Two of the tracks make it onto The Lovvers LP, though they are titled different: "Panties Minds" (instead of "Panty Mind") and "I Multiply" (instead of "We Multiply").

Noise is not something that is easily hyped. Be warned, though, you should learn to discern the hype of Montreal from the hype of AIDS Wolf; it seems like a lot of music writers are suckling on Canada's tit right now.

If I had my 'druthers I would have put "Thrown Away" and "Gimme Some Bass" as one song. The compliment each other.
