The Six Parts Seven - Sleeping Diagonally (Iron & Wine Version)

After a short but needed hiatus, I've finally gotten settled into my new abode and have returned armed with a few choice tracks to share with you. The Six Parts Seven are a mostly instrumental band that have been making records going on a decade. I don't usually get into bands without lyrics. Sitting down with the insert and disecting the words to songs is one of my favorite past times. However, there's just something about this Kent, OH based group's music that made me break my rule.

What I've learned is that my favorite part of listening to a record with no lyrics is making up my own story to go along with the moody and atmospheric songs. I guess other musicians get a kick out of this also because on Lost Notes Form Forgottten Songs that's exactly what they did. Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, Centro-Matic's Will Johnson, Black Heart Procession's Pal Jenkins, 764-Hero's John Atkins and Pedro the Lion's Dave Bazan, just to name a few, reworked a bunch of songs by The Six Parts Seven adding new instrumentation and lyrics. It's a really cool concept, the only problem is that the musicians who were asked to participate in the tribute are clearly more distinctive than The Six Parts Seven. So what you really hear is not Sam Beam doing a Six Parts Seven Song, but an Iron & Wine song with music by The Six Parts Seven. Either way, it's a cool song. Enjoy.
