Snowglobe - Regime
That's what happened to me last week when I was attending the Memphis Tsunami Benefit held at the The Young Avenue Deli. It featured what was hyped as the best line-up of local bands that could be imagined. I had heard the name Snowglobe thrown around by many hipsters in the local scene, but they were mostly people who claimed a friend or aquaintance in the band. (Everyone thinks their friend's band is awesome, right?) Anyway, I was standing with my back to the band next to the bar, so far from the stage that even when I turned to see who was playing those imaginative and jangly pop melodies, I strained my neck but I still couldn't see. So, I did what any real music fan would do: I blew off the guy I was talking to and moved closer to the stage. What I got was a dose of bursting literate songs spanning the dial from sunny AM radio to ya'lternative sing-a-longs to epic space rock. Good call.
The guys from Snowglobe have been playing together for more than 10 years. You can clearly hear shades of their influences, bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, The Flaming Lips, even The Beatles, bouncing around inside the layered melodies of their second release Doing The Distance. And the best part about the whole thing? It's irony free. And that almost seems to be intentional. When Tim Regan sings on Rock Song, "There's been a call for a new direction, it's up to us tonight," I not only believe him, I'm rooting for these guys to come through.
You guys are in for a real treat, Snowglobe is coming to your town. Mark your calendars and be sure to check them out. Tell them I said hi and they promised to buy you a beer.
