Everything But The Girl - Corcovado (Knee Deep Remix/Ben Watt Vocal Re-Edit)
I love Everything But The Girl. In the 1980's when I first heard them, I used to think they were a boring, pretentious band with a long name. Band names can occasionally give one that impression, I suppose. When they disappeared for a minute in the early 1990's (thanks to Ben Watt's near-death experience at the hands of Churg-Strauss Syndrome), I probably would've just written them off as another hit-and-quit 1980's churner. The catalyst for a change in their sound has been as miraculous as Ben's recovery. After 10 years of dancing endlessly to whatever they generated musically, I realize pretension isn't their bag -- it's gorgeous, unforgettable electronic anthems. This new remix retrospective, Adapt or Die: 10 Years of Remixes (Dig), is testament to how Ben & Tracy got their groove back, reinvented themselves and developed a reputation as the Greenwich Mean Time by which DJ's and groovebenders worldwide set their watches. If you've been on a dance floor for more than an hour in the last ten years, there's a good chance you came face-to-face with one of these tracks, and if you weren't familiar with EBTG, you probably went, "This is totally hot, what is this??" Remixers on this need-to-got-to-have compilation include hip-hop master DJ Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, Kevin Yost, Kenny Dope, and even a visit from house impresario Todd Terry.
It was tough to pick one out of the 14 tracks on this CD, but this one particular Knee Deep remix has had me jumping from the day I first laid ears on it. If you like a deep house groove, you've come to the right place.
