The Glass - Superimposed

In honor of tomorrow night's tsunami benefit I thought I'd gush about The Glass, one of my favorite Memphis bands, who'll be performing.

Imagine Jay Farrar singing lead for a Joy Division/Pixies supergroup on psychedelics, and the end result is The Glass. Frequently appearing at the Young Avenue Deli with fellow local darlings Lucero and Snowglobe, their live show is an incredible high-powered yet dreamy treat and they've been known to cover "Cortez the Killer" and The Replacements' "Unsatisfied." Interesting choices for a band I've compared to, uh, "Uncle Pixivision," but there is so much talent between these four guys that they could cover "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" and it'd sound great. I've been known to leave the bar where I work and walk across the street to the Deli during my shifts when they're playing just so I can stand outside the door and listen to "Tell Me It's Snowing."

Their album Concorde was released last year on Makeshift (quick tip: Makeshift Music is the Memphis indie authority) and it conveys a perfect balance of rawness and precision. A&A calls it "transcendent," "well-conceived and highly crafted." I don't think I could've put it better myself.
