The Books - The Lemon of Pink

So I am at a friend's pad one day when this cut and paste sounding music came on that reminded me of those days when my mom used to take me downtown to people watch. It was always a flurry of human sounds tinted with the lonley sound of music ebbing from the run-down bars and street performers - laced with televsions leaking from the windows of lofts that were up and down Main Street. This sound was The Books. They have this keen way of using samples from various sources - old records, TV, urban enviroments - and blending them with acoutcial elements and some decent tweaking to create pieces that have an storytellingesque approach. Each track takes you on a little journey, and the destination is quite unknown.

These deft avant-gardists steal the sounds of the modern world and percolate it with the rhythm of speech, rather than the hegemonic drum beats which normally organize sample-based music. This album, 'The Lemon of Pink', is not too far a cry from cubism or dada. Although the songs can sound, on first impression, as chaotic and unorganized, you are quick to understand the soothing under-current and gain an understanding of these sound-sculpture's unique look at the world around us that present it to you in a captivating way.
