People Like Us - Gesundheit

Yay quirk! I ran across this lovely project at Ubuweb - People Like Us is the sometimes one woman show of the talented Vicki Bennet. Mixing elements lovingly pulled from old records, movies and other found sounds, she creates humorous and seemingly social commentary pieces sans any typical lyrics. Vicki has much to say on the free distirbution of music, and went to far as to put a collective anthology of her works, called "Abridged Too Far", as well as another album, online - free. Here's what she had to say on that...

"We strongly believe in the power of profit through free distribution. Often people have never heard of an artist because they aren't being distributed through as many channels as they should be, due to the very poor state of music/media distribution for non-major label music coupled with ignorance of the way that avant garde art forms infiltrate mainstream culture. Also many prints of a work are allowed to go out of circulation or are deleted for no reason other than cost effectiveness by a label/publisher. This makes perfect sense financially, but no sense whatsoever that a year's work by an artist should also disappear for such reasons. So get all of this while you can, and we completely endorse getting one's work out there, no matter what. If you don't share, your profit is limited."

Oh, and a note on the bonus track - this is from a collaborative radio broadcast with none other than Kenny G. Yes...Kenny G. At first I didn't sample this album due to that bile-like taste I get in my mouth when his name is even mentioned, but gave in after I fell in love with People Like Us' other works. After you hear this cut, you will never think of Mr. G in the same way again. And yes, that is him doing the voice-over.
