ESG - Moody

I'm going to step out of my character for a moment and post a rather osbscure song from post-disco New York Club land circa 1980 (there is such a sneer on my face right now). At any rate, ESG was a very unlikely part of the no-wave phenomenon. They were a group of women that wanted to make stripped-down, danceable soul-jazz, but they ended helping to create the formula for post-disco rhythm music that would inseminate a genre called "house" a little later in the 80's. Just like many of their counterparts (eg Liquid Liquid & A Certain Ratio), ESG was all but forgotten until recently. The lack of extensive recording and distribution is likely to blame. ESG were label-mates of an infant New Order on the American leg of Manchester's Factory Records (watch 24-Hour Party People). Original recordings are all but lost unless, of course, you can afford to pay an astronomical amount for a 12" on eBay. But thanks to tiny British reissue labels (ie Soul Jazz), ESG has returned to give us !!!, Tussle, and scores of others. "Moody" may sound familiar because it has been sampled about one billion times. But that's because it's a great song. I hope you like it.
