Donovan - Season of the Witch

Season of the Witch is what I like to call Folk-Acid. Released on the album Sunshine Superman originally in 1966, this was the time for psychedelic/experimental rock to take hold of the youth and scare the britches off thier parents (this is my guess anyways, similar to what "rave" music did to the youth of the 90's). This song has a groovy organ underlying a strait-forward 4/4 drum riff - and has sporadic moments of psychedelic guitar bursts harmonizing with Donovans vocal.

Donovan has been a favorite songwriter of mine since I was a child and heard "Mellow Yellow" for the first time (which I found out has nothing to do with smoking banana peels). Terry Gross hosted an interview (highly recommended ;) ) with Donovan yesterday which reminded me of how great his best music was - I say his best because there were plenty of songs he did that I just don't get. Ultimately, his work has contributed much to the folk/rock/psychedelic predecessors. I haven't heard his latest album Beat Cafe yet but i will definitely be checkin' it out soon.
